Services

The well-being of the individual is affected by the psychoactive chemical component of the substance, which alters behaviour and impacts the welfare of the other whanau or family members. Mental health disorders like anxiety and depression can be exasperated by addiction. The practitioner can examine the effects of addictions on a person's overall well-being by utilising Sir Mason Durie's (1982) Te Whare Tapa Wha Māori health model and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) and the substance use disorder (SUD) clinical tool. This holistic Māori view can help to recognise the impacts of someone’s dependence on the whanau or family. When one of the four walls of the whare or house is vulnerable, this affects the well-being of the whanau or family structure.

Taha tinana, or physical well-being, is represented by the body’s biological system and substance misuse or dependency effects.

Taha hinengaro, or mental well-being, is the effect of substances or non-substance addictions on the brain and how this affects thinking, thoughts and behaviour change.

Taha wairua, or spiritual well-being, is the effect of addiction on disconnecting from your wairua or spirit.

Taha whanau or social well-being is the understanding of the impact of someone’s addiction on the whanau or family and what social supports are available.

Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) drop-in clinic

The alcohol and other drugs (AOD) drop-in clinic is for people who struggle with alcohol and drug addiction. The programme will involve AOD screening and brief intervention for people seeking help. The clinic will be at Kete, 18a Leigh Street, Kaeo. It runs fortnightly on Fridays from 9 am to 12 pm. The list of dates can be viewed here. It is a free service that Te Rau Ora and Whanau Ora sponsor.

One-to-one Addiction Counselling

Asking for help or talking with someone about substance or non-substance issues can be very difficult. There are still many stigmas and a lack of education or awareness around people accessing services for people who struggle with alcohol or drug addiction. Te Puna Ora Wellness is a registered supplier for WINZ and offers a non-judgemental, confidential, and safe environment for people to korero about their addiction. The sessions are 60 minutes long, and you can apply for ten subsidised sessions from WINZ. Click on the link below to access information regarding applying for the Disability Allowance.

Section 65 Assessment Centre

Taniwha Counselling Services Limited is an approved assessment centre. Section 65 of the Land Transport Act 1998 allows for people with repeat driving offences who have been disqualified indefinitely from holding or obtaining a driver’s licence due to violations involving alcohol and other drugs. You must complete these two steps to end the disqualification period and reinstate your driver’s licence. The disqualification period is one year and one day, and you must meet several requirements as part of engaging with an approved drug and alcohol assessment centre. This service will be available "in person" on Saturday mornings from 9 am to 12 pm. Also, you can go ahead and arrange with Hone an online appointment.

STEP ONE: Getting assessed by an approved drug and alcohol assessment centre.
STEP TWO: Apply for your licence to get reinstated, sit and pass the driver’s licence test.

Comprehensive AOD Report (CAR)

If you require a comprehensive AOD report for Court or a referral to a residential treatment centre, look no further than Te Puna Ora Wellness. We have many years of experience working in addiction and writing AOD reports. The process involves attending an assessment which takes about two hours, and then the report is written and emailed to the referrer.

Peer Support Groups

Peer support is for people who were once physically and mentally dependent on using psychoactive substances. Peer support groups and kaimahi or workers are significant in supporting people with addiction in their first 90 days of recovery.

Twelve-Step Recovery

Hundreds of different twelve-step groups like Narcotics Anonymous now use the 12-steps pioneered by Alcoholics Anonymous. There are open meetings that anyone can attend and closed meetings for those who identify as an alcoholic or addict. People can hear, listen, share or not and get a sponsor to take them through the 12-steps. Al-anon is another 12-step support group that supports significant others or family members affected by someone else's substance use.

SMART Recovery

Smart recovery is an alternative to 12-step and can be accessed by clicking the following link:

SMART Recovery. On Facebook  SMART RECOVERY NZ | Facebook describes
"SMART Recovery is a group program offering a supportive environment for people to achieve behaviour change goals of their choice around alcohol & other drug use, or any behaviours of concern."
